Weekly Movement Notes

  • What Does "Neutral Spine" Mean?

One of the most common cues you will hear in Pilates is "neutral spine." But what does that actually mean?

Neutral spine refers to the natural curves of your spine when your body is properly aligned. Rather than flattening your back completely or excessively arching, neutral spine allows your body to distribute forces efficiently and move with greater ease.

Think of neutral spine as your body's home base, a position that supports both strength and mobility.

  • How to Properly Engage Your Core

Core engagement is about much more than pulling your belly button toward your spine.

The goal is not to brace as hard as possible. Instead, think of creating a supportive corset around your midsection that allows you to move freely while maintaining stability.

    To engage your core:

    1. Begin by taking a slow inhale through the nose.

    2. As you exhale, gently draw your lower abdominals inward as if zipping up a pair of fitted pants.

    3. Maintain normal breathing while keeping a light, supportive engagement.

  • The Role of Breath in Pilates

Joseph Pilates famously said, "Above all, learn how to breathe correctly."

Breath is one of the most important tools in Pilates because it helps coordinate movement, improve focus, and support core activation.

A common Pilates breathing pattern involves inhaling to prepare and exhaling during the most challenging part of an exercise.

The exhale helps create stability and encourages deeper core engagement, making movements feel stronger and more controlled

  • Why Slow Movement Creates Better Results

When movement slows down, your muscles are required to work continuously rather than relying on momentum to complete the exercise.

This increased time under tension can lead to greater strength, stability, and control.

The next time you are in class, challenge yourself to move with intention rather than speed. Notice how much more connected and effective each exercise feels.

Weekly Wellness Tip

Hydration is a performance tool, not just a habit.
Start your morning with a full glass of water before caffeine to support joint health, digestion, and muscular function. Even mild dehydration can impact energy levels, focus, and movement quality.

Hydration Water (Cucumber Mint Infusion)

A simple, refreshing way to elevate your daily hydration and support recovery.

Ingredients:

  • 1 liter cold filtered water

  • ½ cucumber, thinly sliced

  • 8–10 fresh mint leaves

  • 2–3 slices of lemon

  • Optional: 2–3 slices of lemon for brightness

  • Optional: pinch of sea salt (for electrolyte support)

Method:
Add all ingredients to a glass pitcher or bottle. Let infuse for at least 1–2 hours in the refrigerator before drinking. The longer it sits, the more pronounced the flavor.

Tip:
Refill throughout the day using the same cucumber and mint for a light, continuous infusion. Replace ingredients every 24 hours for optimal freshness.
